Phil Neville’s side are bidding to reach a first major final.

England meet the United States for a place in the 2019 Women’s World Cup final.

Here are our best bets for the match in Lyon as Phil Neville’s side bid to reach their first ever major final.

Super-sub Lloyd the danger for Lionesses

Carli Lloyd has been a threat for the USA coming off the bench throughout the tournament.

Lloyd has only started one game and found the net twice in that 3-0 group stage win over Chile and she was also on target from the bench in the opening 13-0 rout of Thailand.

Aside from that game against Chile, she has come on in every game and is averaging four shots on target per 90 minutes throughout the tournament – more than anyone else has managed in France – and the Lionesses will have to remain switched on at the back right until the final whistle to keep the veteran USA midfielder in check.

Lloyd has scored 113 goals in 279 internationals and we fancy her to be on target yet again in Lyon.

Disappointment for Neville’s side

Could the semi-final be one step too far for the Lionesses? (Richard Sellers/PA)

The USA have reached the World Cup final in four of the seven tournaments so far – and have never finished worse than third – and they will be fancied to make a fifth trip to the showpiece.

Jill Ellis’ side breezed through the group stages and although they stuttered against Spain and France on the way to the last four a pair of two-goal outings from Megan Rapinoe ensured they remain alive.

The two sides played out a 2-2 draw the last time they met at the SheBelieves Cup in March when goals from Steph Houghton and Nikita Parris saw England lead before Tobin Heath earned the hosts a draw in Nashville.

England can have a tendency to switch off at the back at times and against a side with the likes of Lloyd, Rapinoe and Alex Morgan that can be fatal.

With that in mind and the extra big-game experience we fancy the USA to move on to compete in a fifth World Cup final with a narrow victory.

Goals galore in Lyon

Ellen White
Ellen White has been in prolific form for England (Richard Sellers/PA)

Both side’s have not had problems finding the back of the net in the tournament.

They have combined for 33 goals so far and England have even had the luxury of missing two penalties and we can expect both teams to have an attacking game plan in the semi-final.

They have both been miserly at the back, allowing just three goals between them.

Four players share the tournament lead with five goals and three of them – England’s Ellen White and the USA pair of Rapinoe and Morgan – will be on display in this game.

With that firepower we believe taking over 2.5 goals is a safe bet.

Recommended bets

Carli Lloyd to score
United States to win
Over 2.5 goals

Takeaways

Carli Lloyd is averaging more shots on target than any other player per 90 minutes at the tournament.
United States are the defending World cup champions
