We have three tips from the second round of the Nature Valley International in Eastbourne.

It’s a busy day at the Nature Valley International on the south coast where there are 16 second-round matches to get through in both the men’s and women’s events.

We have three tips from sunny Eastbourne and kick things off with former champion Karolina Pliskova’s match against Elise Mertens.

Elise Mertens vs Karolina Pliskova

World number three Pliskvova faces Mertens in Eastbourne for the first time and we fancy the Czech to come through in straight sets at odds against.

Pliskova won this tournament in 2017 and was a runner-up the year before, so Eastbourne is clearly a place where she thrives and her form is excellent too having won titles in Brisbane at the start of the year and more recently in Rome.

Mertens has been patchy since winning her fifth singles title in Doha in February and although she had a decent second-round win against Marketa Vondrousova on Tuesday, Pliskova will be much tougher.

Aryna Sabalenka vs Caroline Wozniacki

Wozniacki and Sabalenka meet in a rematch of last year’s final which the Dane won in two tight sets, although the Belarusian came back from a set down to avenge that defeat in Toronto a few weeks later.

Sabalenka had a fairly easy ride in the second round, but Wozniacki has looked comfortable this week, winning both of her matches in straight sets.

After Tuesday’s 6-4 6-4 victory over Andrea Petkovic she said: “I think I served pretty well, and then I got lucky to break her once. I just held serve well, and that was awesome.”

This match looks a tough one to call, so we’re predicting a three-set battle.

Gilles Simon vs Nicolas Jarry

Simon is the slight favourite to reach the quarter-finals in Eastbourne despite an exhausting run of matches lately.

The 34-year-old Frenchman played five successive three-set matches in reaching the final at Queen’s which he lost to Feliciano Lopez, although he ended that sequence with a 2-0 win against Tennys Sandgren yesterday.

Jarry beat world number six Stefanos Tsitsipas at Den Bosch a couple of weeks ago and dropped just one point on serve in his straight-sets win against Pablo Cuevas in Eastbourne yesterday, so we fancy the Chilean to reach the quarter-finals.
